ICEC Wins “Climate Change Grand Leaders Award”

The International Climate and Environment Center (ICEC) founded by the Gwangju Metropolitan City has won the 8th Climate Change Grand Leaders Award in the NGO category in recognition of its outstanding contribution to global climate action.

The Climate Change Grand Leaders Award is an annual recognition program to honor businesses, organizations, scholars, local governments and individuals that have distinguished themselves in climate change responses and awareness raising activities. Organized by the Climate Change Center, the award celebrated its 8th anniversary this year. Key guests at the award ceremony included Kang Chang-hee, former Speaker of South Korea’s National Assembly and current Chairman of the Climate Change Center, Goh Kun, former Prime Minister of South Korea and current Director of the Green Asia Organization, and Yoo young-suk, former Minister of Environment.

The ICEC was named Climate Change Grand Leader in the NGO category at this year’s ceremony held at La Vie Douce, Jung-gu, Seoul on November 1. Other winners at the award included internet portal Naver, renewable energy startup Gridwiz, the Green Technology Center and Asan in South Chungcheong Province. The Gwangju Metropolitan City was a former honoree in the city government category in 2014.

“This award is meaningful in that it is in line with creating a low-carbon green city, which is precisely what our center was founded for. To honor the spirit of the award, our center will continue to bring together expertise and wisdom to address climate change with citizens,” said Lim Nak Pyong, President of International Climate and Environment Center who accepted the award on behalf of the ICEC.
